Mysterious jade Buddha statue inside a mango tree in a Thailand temple

When cutting down an ancient mango tree at a temple in Thailand, people suddenly discovered inside the tree trunk a small Buddha statue made of emerald dating back more than 100 years.

 The above disturbing incident happened in the grounds of Nongsang Pracha Bamroong temple in Chonburi province, Eastern Thailand.

The Nation newspaper described the ancient mango tree being cut down when the abbot of Nongsang Pracha Bamroong pagoda decided to renovate the pagoda in preparation for a major Buddhist event on November 5. The temple hired workers to cut down a mango tree about 10 meters high and about 80 centimeters in diameter.

Preliminary examination determined that the small Buddha statue was made of emerald, dating back more than 100 years. The statue depicts the image of Buddha smiling gently, seemingly damaged during the use of a saw.

Many reporters went to Nongsang Pracha Bamroong Pagoda to report on the Buddha statue. The grounds of this temple have many old trees. The mango tree was cut down and now only the stump remains.

Currently, the Buddha statue is placed in the abbot’s bedroom. It is unclear whether the statue will be restored for public worship.
