The Dark Side of India’s Sexual-culture

The Kandariya Manadev Temple in Khajuraho, India, features erotic sculptures alongside other depictions of daily life. These sculptures, representing about 10% of the temple artwork, showcase various sexual acts and positions. India’s historical sites, including Khajuraho, often incorporate sexual imagery, with the phallic symbol of Shiva being widely worshipped as a symbol of procreation and union.

However, modern India holds conservative views on sex, with pre-marital sex and live-in relationships considered taboo. In 2005, court cases were filed against an actress who supported such arrangements, and sex education programs faced opposition in schools. Conservative attitudes and limited access to comprehensive sex education contribute to misconceptions and inadequate knowledge among Indian youth. Despite India’s rich historical and cultural acceptance of sexuality, societal norms have shifted over time. The Rig Veda, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC, mentions desire and sexual longing as fundamental aspects of creation.

The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian text describing various ways of lovemaking. It includes techniques for kissing, caressing, touching, and biting, treating sex and pleasure as art forms. The Kama Sutra’s origins lie in a lineage of sexual manuals aimed at preserving knowledge. India’s erotic traditions evolved over time, exploring topics like predicting sexual compatibility and celebrating sensuality through theater and poetry. Tantra practices emerged in the 6th and 7th centuries as a rebellion against Brahminical Hinduism’s strict rules. The Mughal dynasty further contributed to erotic literature and art. British colonial rule had a negative impact, suppressing Indian sexual liberalism and outlawing non-procreative sex and courtesans. The social status of hijras and transgender individuals also suffered under British rule. Despite these influences, India’s rich erotic traditions have left a lasting cultural legacy.

Victorian British attitudes towards sex differed from colonized Indians. The British colonial regime suppressed Indian erotica, but conservative views also existed within Hinduism. Educated upper-class Indians, particularly Brahmins, reexamined Indian sexual traditions during colonialism. British influence increased their conservative stance, emphasizing cleanliness, caste purity, and spiritual liberation over pleasure. 20th-century Indian reformers like Gandhi advocated celibacy and held women partly responsible for sexual attacks. However, India is now experiencing a sexual resurgence. A high percentage of young adults engage in premarital sex, online pornography searches have doubled, and the contraceptive market has grown significantly. Increased internet access has enabled more Indians to access previously forbidden knowledge. This sexual revolution in India seems unstoppable.

Traditional patriarchal attitudes persist in India despite the awakening of sexual liberties. A significant number of young Indian men in cities have engaged in sex with sex workers, indicating that conservative attitudes discourage young women from exploring their sexuality. Women are still categorized as “good” or “bad,” leading to an increase in surgical vaginal tightening procedures as sexually active individuals worry about their marriage prospects. Conservative attitudes in educational institutions result in the dangerous withholding of sex education from curious young Indians. Surveys have shown that a small percentage of young Indians receive any form of sex education, and many lack knowledge on protecting themselves from HIV/AIDS. While India may be experiencing a sexual revolution in urban areas, conflicting feelings of guilt arise from enjoying a natural act that is associated with forbidden desires.
