Dallas Cowboys getting infusion of cap space as calendar turns to June

The Dallas Cowboys were up against it in terms of cap space ahead of the month of June, but that is changing and Dallas will now have some breathing room to operate with moving forward.

With the calendar turning to June, the money saved from the release of wide receiver Michael Gallup is about to hit the Cowboys’ books. According to Spotrac, Dallas is adding a significant $9.5 million in cap space.

Of course, the Cowboys will still be on the hook for dead-cap hits, but cutting Gallup with the post-June 1 designation allowed Dallas to spread them out over two years. The Cowboys will be on the hook for $4.35 million in 2024 and $8.7 million next season.

With that, the Cowboys now sit with $12.37 million in effective cap space (the cap space a team will have after signing at least 51 players and its projected rookie class to its roster), according to Over the Cap.

That is still just the 12th-lowest total in the NFL, but it does give the Cowboys some money to make another addition and operate during the regular season.

Of course, the Cowboys could’ve used this money earlier in the offseason when free agency was in full swing. At this point, there’s mostly scraps left on the free-agent market, with the exception of the safety position.

As for Gallup, he is now a member of the Las Vegas Raiders after signing a one-year, $1.75 million deal.
