Dan Hurley is the talk of the town right now as reports indicate the Los Angeles Lakers are pursuing him to be their next head coach. The NBA is much different than college basketball so it’ll be interesting to see how Hurley adjusts if he accepts the role. In the meantime, Hall of Fame UConn basketball coach, Jim Calhoun offers stern advice for Hurley moving forward.

Hurley has seemingly become one of the biggest names in basketball since leading the Huskies to back-to-back championships. The UConn basketball program was the most dominant team in the nation last season. With that comes a spotlight and Calhoun believes Dan Hurley is handling the spotlight well, according to David Borges of CT Insider. But overall, Jim Calhoun calls Hurley’s situation a win-win situation.

“When the spotlight hits you, you’ve got to be able to react. It’s like going from one pro league to another pro league I never had a desire to go to the NBA. Danny says he’d like to do it someday. And I understand that. In my opinion, he can’t lose. A couple of years from now, he signs this massive contract. Massive contract equals, to me, that he’s going to get not only money, but generational money. His grandkids are going to be taken care of. And, three, four years from now, he’d still be coaching the Lakers, or almost name his job.”

When you put it that way, it’d be hard to decline the job from the Lakers. Especially if they make him an offer he can’t refuse. Based on how successful Dan Hurley has been over the years, it’s not crazy to believe LA offers a lucrative deal that would make the UConn basketball coach the highest-paid coach in the NBA.

Can UConn basketball three-peat if Dan Hurley takes Lakers job?

After winning two consecutive championships in a row the UConn basketball team may lose their head coach. If that’s the case then the question will be if the Huskies can accomplish a three-peat in the NCAA Tournament.

That’s a tough task even if Hurley remains at UConn. But overall, this is a team stacked with talent and is viewed as one of the best basketball programs in the nation. Even if a new head coach takes over next season, the Huskies should be able to retain plenty of talent on the roster.

With that said, the UConn basketball team should be a threat to win another championship next season, with or without Dan Hurley. The head coach plays a massive role, so it’ll be interesting to see how the hiring process plays out if the Huskies are forced to find a replacement. But, to put it simply, the Huskies are definitely capable of winning a third championship in three years even if Hurley leaves for the Lakers.
