Miami Dolphins training camp preview 2024: Quarterbacks roster breakdown

The Miami Dolphins open their 2024 training camp next week. The rookies will report to the team’s training facilities next to Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday. A week later, the rest of the team will report, giving Miami its full roster beginning on July 23. The first practice open to the public will be on July 28.

The Dolphins’ roster may still see some changes, with veteran free agents or players cut throughout the summer receiving an invite to Miami to at least have a chance of making the team, but the vast majority of the team’s 53-man regular-season roster has already been signed. What does Miami’s roster look like before the start of training camp?

Miami Dolphins 2024 training camp roster: Quarterbacks

Gavin Hardison (rookie – UDFA)

The main storyline heading into training camp for the Dolphins is the contract negotiations between the team and Tagovailoa. The team’s 2020 first-round draft pick is slated to play the year on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. The two sides are working on an extension, keeping Tagovailoa in Miami for the foreseeable future while adding guaranteed money beyond this year – and potentially making Tagovailoa the highest paid quarterback in the league. The goal is to have a deal in place before camp begins – meaning there is a soft-deadline of just under two weeks.

Of course, unless one side or the other decides to cut off negotiations, working out the deal could continue into training camp, but both sides seem to want to get it done. Reports continue to indicate the Dolphins and Tagovailoa are actively working toward a new contract, but this storyline will continue until the new deal is completed.

Beyond the contract talks, the Dolphins’ quarterbacks group is pretty well set. Tagovailoa will hold the top spot, White should be the second-string passer, with Thompson as the third option. The NFL changed the emergency quarterback rule this year, allowing a player on the practice squad to serve as the third quarterback on gameday instead of the emergency quarterback having to be on the active roster. Will that cost Thompson a roster spot? Could Thompson show enough in training camp to surpass White on the depth chart?

Hardison would need to impress early to earn a practice squad consideration.

Could Miami look to add a veteran passer to the roster this summer, especially if a Tagovailoa holdout begins? Former Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is still a free agent and could be an enticing option if Miami needs one.
