Chiefs Injuries: Team swaps tight ends, loses 1 cornerback, gets 1 back

On Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs conducted their 11th 2024 training camp practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

The day’s injury news begins with the introduction of a new player. Former TCU tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey was on the field with his new teammates. He was wearing No. 85. Since that number was previously assigned to injured tight end Izaiah Gathings (hamstring) — and since Gathings was absent from the practice field — we believe that Spivey is taking Gathings’ roster spot.

UPDATE at 4:52 p.m.: Both these transactions are now confirmed, per Friday’s official NFL transactions report.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end spent 2022 at TCU before transferring to Mississippi State. But the NCAA denied Spivey’s transfer portal request, so he never suited up for a Bulldogs game.

Cornerback Jaylen Watson (who was officially taken off the Active/PUP list on Wednesday) appeared in full pads and helmet, but was wearing a yellow no-contact jersey. So he was cleared to participate in practice, but the team is taking no chances that he will re-injure his shoulder.

Cornerback Kelvin Joseph appeared on the field without helmet or pads. While we expect to learn more about his situation after the session concludes, he is not participating in practice. We also expect to learn more about offensive tackle Wanya Morris, who didn’t finish practice. He was treated in the medial tent before riding back to the locker room in the front of a cart.

UPDATE at 12:10 p.m.: According to head coach Andy Reid, Joseph sustained a “slight hamsting” injury, while Morris hurt his left shoulder.

Linebacker Nick Bolton (elbow), wide receiver Kadarius Toney (ankle), cornerback Nazeeh Johnson (hamstring) and safety Deon Bush (ankle) were also present but not participating.

Wide receiver Justin Watson (foot) was once again absent — but in a social media post on Thursday night, he indicated he would be back “soon.”

Among players currently on either the Active/PUP (physically-unable-to-perform) or Active/NFI (non-football injury) lists, safety Justin Reid (quad) and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (triceps) and defensive end Charles Omenihu (ACL) were present but did not participate. Defensive end BJ Thompson (illness) was absent.
