Veteran NFL wideout Willie Snead, who previously called Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa ‘soft’ in a tweet, has now joined the team and is Tagovailoa’s latest teammate.

Snead, an 11-year NFL journeyman, has played for six teams before his move to the Dolphins, sharing the field with top quarterbacks like Drew Brees, Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton, and most recently Brock Purdy. However, earlier this year, he seemed to lack respect for Tagovailoa, as evidenced by a harsh tweet he sent out after the Dolphins’ playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

In January, Snead tweeted: “The Dolphins will be good when Tua stop acting soft AF.” Now a member of the Dolphins, Snead had to address the situation with both the team and Tagovailoa himself.

Speaking to journalists, Snead expressed regret: “To be honest, I was watching the game… I’m a fan of the game. And I was rooting for the Dolphins that game. I wanted the Dolphins to get past the Chiefs.

“I was emotional about it and I tweeted something I probably shouldn’t have and I regret it today. But me and Tua talked last night, worked on a handshake. We put that behind us. We kind of talked about it and we’re moving on from it.”

The Dolphins boasted the top-ranked offence in the 2023 season, with Tagovailoa delivering his best professional performance yet after clinching a national championship with Alabama. Despite impressing since joining the NFL, Tagovailoa has faced harsh criticism for his style of play – particularly when asked to work through his progressions and push the ball down the field in tight games.

The playoff game that sparked Snead’s tweet was one where the quarterback struggled, before Patrick Mahomes led the team to a comfortable victory, while Tagovailoa made several errors.

However, following his career-best year in 2023, the Dolphins rewarded Tagovailoa with a colossal contract this summer. The Hawaiian signed a four-year extension worth $212.4 million (£158.5 million), averaging $53.1 million (£39.6 million) per year, making him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history.

Snead will be aiming to secure a spot on the Dolphins roster, having only played in five games over the past four years.
