Over the past few seasons, Jamal Murray has established himself as a reliable and integral player for the Denver Nuggets. While Nikola Jokic may be the team’s standout star, Murray’s consistent performances have positioned him as a crucial second option on the court. This offseason, the Nuggets made many big moves. But the final big move of this offseason was Jamal Murray signing a four-year, $208 million contract with the Nuggets.

Recently on his podcast the Gils Arena, Gilbert Arenas discussed Jamal Murray signing an extension with the Nuggets. Despite the big number, the former NBA star believes it is a steal. Arenas thinks Murray’s value could easily reach $305 million to $325 million. Agent Zero highlighted Murray’s ability as a clutch player who can make big shots when the team needs them.

A guy that has so much and he does so much for the team, and he doesn’t get the accolades and awards. So, this is cheap for what they get, right?

Gilbert Arenas also mentioned how Murray has still not made the All-Star game and All-NBA teams despite showcasing great talent throughout the years.

Many fans agree with Arenas’ claims, noting that Murray’s impressive statistics are not being duly recognized. In the previous season, Murray averaged 21.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game, which speaks for his performance.

After the Minnesota Timberwolves handed the Nuggets a disappointing loss in the playoffs last season, the Nuggets are determined to come back stronger in the next. The team boasts a well-balanced roster led by Nikola Jokic and Murray. Murray is focused on improving his performance from the previous season to prove his value to the team.

Kendrick Perkins feels Jamal Murray must step up without Nikola Jokic

After Jamal Murray signed the $208 million extension with the Nuggets, many fans criticized the move. Critics pointed to Murray’s underwhelming performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics as evidence that he may not be worth the massive investment. Former NBA star Kendrick Perkins added fuel to the fire. He suggested that 27-year-old star needs to justify his contract.

Perkins issued a direct challenge to Murray on the latest episode of NBA Today on ESPN. He expressed his belief that Murray must show his true value in relation to his contract. Perkins emphasized the importance of Murray stepping up his game on the court, especially in the absence of Jokic.

I’m looking at [Jamal Murray] and I’m saying, what can you bring to the table without [Nikola Jokic] being on the floor? I’m not saying he’s not going to play with Jokic because obviously Jokic is reliable. But when it comes down to Jamal Murray, I think this year he has to take that leap.

Moreover, he highlighted the potential benefits of Murray taking on more responsibility, allowing Jokic to operate without feeling the weight of the entire team on his shoulders.

Murray played an important role in Nuggets championship in 2023. He was the second-best player on a championship winning team next to the Joker. For the next season, the pressure will be on Murray to step up his game and silence his doubters as the expectations for him are higher than ever.
