An Illustrated Bible Dating Back Millennia Found in Tokat, Turkey

Conny Waters – AncientPages.com – A nearly millennium-old gilded Bible has been seized, during a police operation in the northern province of Tokat, Turkey. Also, ten people were taken into custody as part of the operation.

A total of four operations were carried out in the city center and two in Tokat’s Turhal district.

The police were informed that three people were marketing historical artifacts and an operation was launched against the house where the three suspects lived.

The origin of the Bible remains unknown, although we know it is written in the ancient Syriac language. The Bible’s contents includes depictions of Jesus Christ and various other figures from Biblical lore.

The coins that date back to Roman and Byzantine times were also seized by police.
During the operation, a 21×16-centimeter, 10-page gilded Bible was found. The Bible, which was written in Syriac and included religious photos, was estimated to date back to 1,000 years ago, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

In total 294 historical artifacts have been recovered during operations in the city.
According to reports, a series of operations were launched in Tokat’s city center and the neighboring Turhal district. The Bible itself was promptly delivered to a museum.
