With Steph Curry putting the French away in the gold medal match and LeBron James winning the Olympics MVP, other Team USA performances are being forgotten.

Lakers star Anthony Davis was stellar as a backup big for the United States. He ended the tournament averaging 8.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and two assists per game.

In many games, he was the best big on Team USA over Joel Embiid, who struggled at times and Bam Adebayo, who also came off the bench.

With the focus now on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, one begins to wonder how many of these USA players will be on that roster.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN discussed Davis’ desire to play at the next Olympics and the threat this French national team still poses to Team USA on the latest episode of his podcast “Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective.”

The point is, the French have really good young players and Team USA’s best players were all in their mid-to-late 30s. Even AD is 30. AD said ‘I’m going to be there for LA’ and I was like ‘OK you’re going to be 34, let’s see.’”

It’s hard to project a player’s ability and potential decline four years out, but Davis playing in 2028 seems fairly possible. If he does play in the 2028 Olympics at 34, he’ll still be younger than LeBron, Curry and Kevin Durant were during this Olympic run.

If he takes care of his body and avoids the injury bug, I can’t imagine enough American bigs being so much better than AD that he gets left off the team.

The added allure of representing the host country and the host city you play for professionally has to be a motivating factor for Davis.

How cool would it be if he still played for the Lakers and was playing for Team USA in basketball games in L.A.?

That’s a once-in-a-lifetime scenario that seems impossible to miss.

Unless the circumstances change, Davis will control his destiny in this scenario. He’s an All-NBA talent, played for Team USA in multiple Olympics and he’s continued to improve in every tournament run.

Perhaps at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, he can have his best performance yet, be a bonafide starter for Team USA and ensure they win their sixth straight gold medal.
