Chiefs Training Camp: Day 3 observations from July 23
On Tuesday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to their field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for another practice of the team’s 2024 training camp.
This was the third of 19 public sessions on the practice field next to MWSU’s Spratt Stadium. 15 of the remaining practices will be open to the public — click here for details and a full schedule — while one more will be open only to the team’s Season Ticket Members.
Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. He posted some observations on social media — starting with warmer (but continued dry) weather.
The heat has found St. Joseph. Temps were in the mid-70s as practice began and increased to the high 70s as it went along. Previous seasons dictate that it will get hotter from here.

The injury list was unchanged from Monday.
No injury news change from Tuesday, with NFI players (S Justin Reid and DL BJ Thompson) remaining out. The same for PUP players (DT Derrick Nnadi, DL Charles Omenihu, LG Joe Thuney and CB Jaylen Watson).

Head coach Andy Reid on the status of Worthy: “Xavier Worthy is ill. He’s getting better but not ready to practice yet.”
Reid added Thompson was in attendance at practice watching, but he’s not ready to go. Lucas Niang took Thuney’s top LG role during this look.

Patrick Mahomes was on fire throughout Tuesday’s practice.
The Chiefs began with an 11-on-11 period. Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce on the first play before showcasing his unique ability on the next 2 plays: first, a rollout to his left to find Justin Watson across his body in stride, then a rollout to his right to find Isiah Pacheco.

But the quarterback wasn’t the only one who was lit.
Back and forth: Trent McDuffie broke up Mahomes’ pass intended for Nikko Remigio — and on the next play, Mahomes beat McDuffie deep right on a pass to Rashee Rice for a touchdown.
Skyy Moore popped up the ball on the final play into the hands of McDuffie for an interception.

Pete noticed three reserve players making things happen, too.
In 11s against Carson Wentz, it looked like Neil Farrell batted down a pass at the line and Deon Bush had a near-interception. After Wentz connected with Kadarius Toney, Malik Herring forced him to fumble.

Here’s a highlight with the name of the fourth-round rookie tight end attached to it.
During a late-practice 11-on-11 period, Mahomes floated a perfect pass to his right over the leaping arms of Leo Chenal, finding Jared Wiley in stride with a lot of green grass in front of him.

And another that is all Hollywood.
The play that got the greatest rise of the crowd on Tuesday happened on the first play of 7-on-7, with Mahomes connecting with Hollywood Brown on a deep post route over Chamarri Conner and Bryan Cook.

That’s right: the guys on the other team are Chiefs, too. Maybe it’s harder to tell when those Guardian Caps are covering the logos on the helmets.
Funny moment: Mahomes had another deep try later into the period to Mecole Hardman, but it was broken up by McDuffie and Cook.
The crowd groaned, causing DC Steve Spagnuolo to turn around and encourage them to cheer for the defensive play. They did as Spags asked.

We’ve all spent a lot of time imagining a return to the deep game. So far, so good.
All the talk about the Chiefs reengaging the deep third of the field on offense hasn’t been just talk. Mahomes’ willingness to try to go deep has been noticed, and Reid said it has really just been a shift in his decision-making due to boosted personnel.

At least on Tuesday, the more experienced left tackle got the first-team action. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
Wanya Morris took all of the snaps at first-team left tackle on Tuesday, different than the first couple days in which we saw him rotate with Kingsley Suamataia. Reid has been encouraged by what he’s seen in that regard but is eager for more information.

Reid on Morris: “He’s done a nice job. Everything is kind of pass. You’re not doing a ton of running here, but for what we’re asking him to do, he’s doing a nice job.”

The fight for the cornerback spot across from Trent McDuffie continued.
DC Steve Spagnuolo has mentioned that the candidates for the starting cornerback role opposite Trent McDuffie are Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson and Nazeeh Johnson. Williams saw most of the first-ream reps Tuesday though Johnson did get some work against Mahomes in 7s.

The veteran backup quarterback seems to be working out all right.
I thought backup Carson Wentz had his most impressive day so far, seems to be finding a nice groove with the second team.
In the emergency quarterback role, I’ve been more impressed with Ian Book than Chris Oladokun, but there’s a long way to go there.

The veteran kicker is looking good, too — but this is not a surprise, yes?
Kicker Harrison Butker went 7 of 8 during the kicking period on Tuesday, missing only from 52 and before making from what looked to be around 55.
