When the Kansas City Chiefs conducted the first full practice of their 2024 training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph on Sunday morning, there was unexpected injury news.

Safety Justin Reid appeared at practice without a helmet, suggesting that he was injured. It developed that he had been listed on Saturday’s NFL transactions report on the team’s Active/NFI (non-football injury) list. So he remains on the roster, but cannot participate in practice until he passes a physical. We expect to learn more about Reid’s situation when head coach Andy Reid speaks to reporters after Sunday’s session.

Also missing from practice was reserve tight end Gerrit Prince. He had been on the team’s practice squad before suffering a broken foot last December. On Friday, reporters spotted him wearing a walking boot. We have now learned that he will be waived with an injury designation on Monday. Taking his place on the roster will be tight end Izaiah Gathings, who was signed to the practice squad after Prince was injured last season. Gathings was waived from the 90-man offseason roster on May 4.

We also learned that running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was also added to the team’s Active/NFI list on Saturday evening with an illness — but he was participating in practice on Sunday. So we should expect him to be activated to the roster in the next official transactions report.

As expected, left guard Joe Thuney (pectoral), cornerback Jaylen Watson (labrum), and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (triceps) were present, but were without their helmets, working with trainers during the practice. Defensive end Charles Omenihu was absent. All four of those players went on the team’s Active/PUP (physically-unable-to-perform) list on Wednesday. Defensive end BJ Thompson was also absent. He was placed on the Active/NFI list (illness) on Wednesday.
