Dallas Cowboys rookie Caelen Carson making his case for the team’s fourth cornerback

August 4, 2024

Similar to the players they guard on a play by play basis, the Dallas Cowboys appear rather set at the top when it comes to cornerback. Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland are on the precipice of playing together as top options for the first time. Jourdan Lewis is a seasoned veteran who can more than man things in nickel. Like with wide receiver, the top three options are all ones that we feel very good about generally.

But also like with wide receiver, we entered training camp with some questions about the fourth option and therefore the first person off the bench. Thankfully it appears as if the Cowboys are getting what they want to from the wide receiver position (with Jalen Cropper having a nice day on Saturday), and as fate would have it, that seems to be happening at cornerback as well.

Caelen Carson is starting to shine throughout camp

If you had guessed who held the CB4 spot when the team’s charter touched down in Oxnard, who would you have said?

Despite having the most time served with the organization most would not have gone with Nahshon Wright. Obviously the Cowboys traded up in the draft last year for Eric Scott Jr., but we have yet to have really seen anything from him so he was a bit of a question mark.

Perhaps you would have chosen the new-look rookie as we often get excited by new things in general. Caelen Carson is indeed in the middle of his first ever training camp as the Cowboys drafted him in the fifth round out of Wake Forest just a few months ago.

Call it capitalizing on the opportunity presented by a lack of any real option in front of him, but Carson may be evolving into the CB4 that we began looking for. Saturday was easily the best day that any option other than the starting three have had. He was everywhere.

Sometimes being a rookie allows you to play with a bit of reckless abandon. You are trying to hard to prove yourself and earn a place. We aren’t in the mind of Carson and have no idea what his actual disposition is, but it appears that he is not afraid to challenge anything or anyone.

The Cowboys began camp with no concrete idea as to who could take over that particular roster spot. Given that they had to depend on it immediately into the season last year with Trevon Diggs tearing his ACL before the third game, it stands to reason that figuring it out sooner rather than later would be helpful. We are starting to see significant steps there.
