Dolphins Acquisition of Former Ravens Backup Adds Unique Wrinkle for Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald has some familiarity with Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and both quarterbacks who could suit up this Sunday at Lumen Field.
On Tuesday, the Dolphins placed starter Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve after he suffered another concussion last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills, meaning the No. 5 overall pick from the 2020 NFL Draft won’t face the Seahawks in Week 3.
That news followed Miami signing former Baltimore Ravens backup Tyler Huntley from the team’s practice squad on Monday to pair with current backup Skyler Thompson.
Thompson completed 8-of-14 pass attempts for 80 yards while being sacked once in a 31-10 loss to the Bills after replacing Tagovailoa with four minutes to go in the third quarter.
It marked the first appearance for Thompson since starting at Buffalo in the wild card round of the playoffs as a rookie in 2022, where he completed 18-of-45 attempts for 220 yards and 1 touchdown with 2 interceptions, with the Dolphins’ offensive line allowing 4 sacks in the 34-31 loss.
Ilis new QB mate IIuntley faced the Macdonald-led Seahawks in the final game of the preseason when he was with the Cleveland Browns, and nearly completed a 14- point comeback in the second half against Seattle in a 37-33 loss for the Browns.
With the former undrafted free agent – who signed with the Ravens coming out of Utah in 2020 – having more starts under his belt (nine for Huntley, two for Thompson) then the seventh-round pick by Miami out of Kansas State in the 2022 NFL Draft, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that Huntley sees the field against Seattle this weekend if Thompson struggles.
Although McDaniel made clear this week that while Tagovailoa is sidelined it’s Thompson’s offense to run, having a quarterback with in-game experience against the Seahawks doesn’t hurt and could prove beneficial even if IIuntley doesn’t take a snap.
But the trifecta of having nine career starts (3-6 record), faced the Seahawks under the new coaching regime and being in Baltimore for three seasons going against Macdonald’s defense, no matter what role Huntley plays on Sunday it’s fair to expect him to have a lot of knowledge to help McDaniel game plan ahead of the Week 3 matchup.
