CeeDee Lamb wants Dak Prescott to get a new contract. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys also want to retain their franchise quarterback, and Dak himself wants to stay in Dallas, too; the point is that all three sides have made it clear that they want to stay. together.

That said, there is no new deal in the works, although owner and general manager Jerry Jones did discuss negotiations Wednesday before the Cowboys’ second and final training camp practice at The Star in Frisco.

“That hasn’t changed,” Jones said. “We’re still, first and foremost, all focused on the next 10 days to two weeks — the opener. That takes priority over [everything]. Lamb wasn’t here. Dak is here.

“So, really, we have no more to do on those important things that we talk about every time we get together to get this season up and running and engaged, so it will continue to be as it has been.”

Obviously, some clarity is required here, so Jones provided it. That’s because, with Lamb’s new mega-deal officially on the books, there has been speculation that Sept. 8 will serve as some sort of deadline for do something with Prescott, so that the talks don’t get put on hold until next offseason.

Jones says that’s simply not the case.

“There is no evidence of any of that,” he said. “That’s why I said it’s the same as always.”

In other words, the Cowboys will continue to negotiate with Prescott until a deal is reached, even if it extends into the 2024 season. That means a deal could happen at any time over the next few months, though that doesn’t preclude it from possibly happening in the near future. sometime over the next few days.

With Prescott’s franchise tag not being possible in 2025, while there may not be much urgency at the moment, that changes with each passing day as we get closer and closer to March.

It’s a waiting game, but with a lot of activity.
