Lakers fans troll Shams over JJ Redick report after Woj’s Dan Hurley bombshell

Ever since the Los Angeles Lakers fired Darvin Ham earlier this offseason, the team has found themselves being heavily linked to JJ Redick as their top target to replace him. That changed on Thursday morning, though, when Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Lakers were making a big push for UConn men’s basketball head coach Dan Hurley. And while things don’t look good for Redick, they really don’t look good for Shams Charania.

Prior to Wojnarowski’s Hurley bomb, Charania had reported that the Lakers were closing in on Redick to be their next head coach. As we know now, though, that isn’t actually the case. So when Woj’s report came out, fans were quick to thrash Shams on social media, with some going as far to claim that Wojnarowski had somehow tricked Charania into believing that Redick was LA’s top target.

All throughout this process, Charania has seemingly been driving the Redick-Lakers hype train. It’s worth noting that Redick hosts a podcast with LeBron James, so the link between him and Los Angeles made sense. However, Redick’s comments on Charania’s reports indicated that something about the situation wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed to be.

Sure enough, it appears that Hurley, not Redick, is the Lakers top candidate to replace Ham. While Hurley didn’t initially seem to be interested in leaving UConn after they won their second straight NCAA championship this past season, Los Angeles is preparing a monster contract offer for him in hopes that they can persuade him to head out west.

Contrary to popular belief, Hurley has been LA’s top option throughout the entire process. While Redick is in the mix, he’s not the de facto leader of the pack like many believed him to be. Many folks were fooled by the Lakers, including Shams. However, unlike the rest of us, Charania is an NBA insider, so he’s obviously going to take a bit of heat for this considering his prior reporting.

This has set the stage for a frantic ending to the Lakers head coach search. They clearly have some momentum with Hurley, but it’s not going to be easy to convince him to leave the Huskies. And should they succeed in their quest to do so, it’s likely going to cost them quite a bit of money in the form of a massive long-term deal.

Redick may ultimately end up missing out on this gig, but the fact that he had so many rumors surrounding his candidacy indicates that he will likely end up as a head coach in the NBA at some point in the near future. Charania is likely the guy most to blame for the Redick rumors getting out of control, though, and he will have to hit the phones again in an effort to get even in his long-running battle with Wojnarowksi.
