Owen Wright makes case for Ravens third string RB role

On Saturday against the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens running back Owen Wright raced off the 14-yard line. His head was down as he sprinted to the right side. After six yards, he turned to find quarterback Josh Johnson sending a pass his way. The ball was a touch behind him. Wright swiveled, secured the ball and turned around to find Atlanta Falcons inside linebacker Milo Eifler beating him intercepting his angle to the end zone.

Wright caught the ball at the six-yard line. Eifler had begun tackling Wright at the three. But Wright had the wherewithal to extend the ball to the pylon, which came tumbling down as he did.

To Wright’s dismay, officials initially called him down at the one-yard line. But an unofficial replay courtesy the Ravens’ video board operators showed the officials Wright did in fact contact the pylon before he was down, overturning the call on the field.

“I thought I scored,” Wright said. “And then I looked up at the scoreboard and saw the review, and thought, yes, I definitely got it.”

It’s the first time Wright’s been in the end zone in the NFL. He described it as “electric.”

“I felt great that we all executed, and we were able to come out and score and it felt electric to score in front of this crowd,” Wright said. “It’s amazing.”

The past two games have been fulfilling Wright’s childhood dreams. He’s a Maryland native, born in Bethesda, Md., and attended Georgetown Preparatory. Last week, Wright was announced as a starter. He ran out of the tunnel with glee.

“It was honestly a dream come true, especially being from Maryland,” Wright said. “Playing in Baltimore, it’s huge, especially for my family being here, too. It was really a blessing [that] I’m going to remember forever, honestly.”

Now, he’s scored a touchdown in his home state. All that’s left is to make the Ravens’ 53-man roster, and he’s put himself in good position with a solid training camp and two successful preseason exhibitions.

But Wright shared he’s not thinking about if he’ll be a Raven after 4 p.m. ET on August 27. For now, he’s soaking up the preseason.

“I’m just in a blessed position, honestly. I’m really not thinking about that, I’m just coming out there and playing football, playing Ravens football,” Wright said. “I want to compete at a high level and whatever happens, happens at the end of the day. Competing at running back or special teams, anything I can do to help this team to get better and to win, I’m going to do it.”
