Miami Dolphins Are In Desperate Need Of Trading For A Backup Quarterback

August 23, 2024

Skylar Thompson of the Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are headed to Tampa to play their last preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and so far both backup quarterbacks Skylar Thompson and Mike White have been nothing but short of expectations for the Miami Dolphins. This is concerning since there has been no announcement from Miami on who will back up starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Last year’s backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was 16-34 for 156 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, and his passer rating is 57.9% in this year’s preseason. Meanwhile, third-string quarterback Mike White has thrown for 142 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions with a passer rating of 56.3%.  Neither quarterback has pulled away in the competition at quarterback. This is short of impressive for the Miami coaching staff. If GM Chris Grier and the Miami Dolphins do not do something about a QB2 the season can be interesting for the Dolphins if Tua does go down for any particular reason and misses games.

The Miami Dolphins Need to Consider Trading a Draft Pick for a Backup

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (17) signals during the first half of an NFL preseason football game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, in Cleveland, Ohio.

This will lead to a disaster for Miami if they do not fix the quarterback situation. If Tua goes down in the regular season the Dolphins will have no quarterback to compete for the playoffs. According to Zac Jackson of The Athletic, the Cleveland Browns have held discussions about trading for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Thompson-Robinson is currently the Browns’ third-string quarterback.

In Cleveland’s two exhibition games, Thompson-Robinson has completed 27 of 35 passes for 260 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. He has a passer rating of 85.4. This is a better passer rating than Skylar Thompson or Mike White.

What will GM Chris Grier do for the Quarterback Situation?

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier discusses the upcoming draft on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

Miami Dolphins Chris Grier needs to figure out a solution for the Dolphins’ backup quarterback situation before the NFL season gets underway. The Miami Dolphins should trade for a quarterback but they need to do something quick. This has been by far the worst performance in Miami by both backup quarterbacks in this year’s training camp.

Even though Dorian Thompson-Robinson might be the greatest quarterback out there, he is certainly putting up better numbers this preseason than Miami’s quarterbacks. With Coach Mike McDaniel’s offensive mind, Thompson-Robinson can fit in with the offensive schemes.

The Miami Dolphins have one more preseason game to go in Tampa Bay on Friday night where both quarterbacks will have their last chance to prove to the Dolphins coaching staff they can stay in Miami and back-up Tua Tagovailoa this season. The 53-man roster will be made by the end of August, it will be determined who will get to stay in Miami or if the Dolphins decide to trade a draft pick for another quarterback.

Final Thoughts

The Miami Dolphins have a solid team this year to make the playoffs and maybe overcome the Buffalo Bills this year to get the top spot in the AFC East. If the Dolphins can make some moves after this last preseason game in Tampa they will be ok all around.  GM Chirs Grier has a lot to absorb and evaluate in Friday night’s game with both quarterbacks Skylar Thompson and Mike White. If both quarterbacks do not play well, we can see a desperate trade happening in Miami to get another quarterback before the new NFL season starts.
