PQOTD: How Much More Time Do You Give Him Edition?

I don’t think there is a Miami Dolphins fan alive who would not say that Tyreek Hill has been the best and most consistent player on this team over the last couple of seasons. He’s been either the first or second-best wideout over the previous couple of seasons and the Dolphin’s most potent weapon. When Miami traded for Hill, they gave him a massive deal, making him the highest-paid receiver in the entire league. While his average money per season was by far the highest in the NFL, it has since been eclipsed. While the annual average of Hill’s deal has been surpassed, that fact does not even consider the backloaded money put into the final year of the deal. The final season of Hill’s deal, 2026, gives him a cap hit of 56.3 million dollars. All parties involved in the contract were well aware when it was signed that the Dolphins had zero intent to ever pay Hill that kind of money in the final year of the deal.

Now that Hill has publicly expressed his desire to see his deal reworked to bring it more in line with the top-paid players at his position, the Dolphins will have to decide. Miami will have to decide whether to give Tyreek even more money over the life of his current deal or give him an extension that gives him more money on average. Hill will enter this season at 30 years old and coming off his best season in the NFL. Deciding how many years Hill will remain at the top of his game is somewhat tricky given his age, but one would guess that barring severe injury, he will be at least a “serviceable” wideout for another few seasons. The Dolphins have to decide if he will remain anything close to what he is now vs. just an effective receiver before they decide on any extension or if they even wish to just up his average money per season on his current contract. If Hill slips, the team will not want to continue to pay him, as if he is one of the best players in the game.

If I were the Dolphins’ GM, I would bring him in, give him an extension that boosts his average pay, and work a deal where I could walk away after a couple of seasons without any serious implication for the salary cap. I know that I asked earlier what the team should do with HIll, but today’s question will be more about an extension. Hill wants more money but also now says that he wants to continue to play in Miami for now and in the future. While he has stated in the past that he would be retiring sooner rather than later, that sentiment has seemingly been replaced with one where he wants to play as long as he can and wishes to do so in South Florida. I suspect that with Hill’s myriad of children (10 w/4 women; 1 more on the way with his wife), he will want to make all the money he can for as long as he can because that can’t be cheap. The primary benefit to the team would not only be keeping Hill happy but would give them more cap space for the here and now.

So tonight’s question of the day is not specifically about giving Hill more money, as we have already covered that, but- Would you if you were the Dolphins GM, give Hill an extension? If so, for how long and how much would you pay him over that period? Would you give yourself an idea of the deal, and how would you structure it to hopefully favor the Dolphins?
