Report: Stephen Curry Tried To Recruit Paul George To Warriors

According to NBA reporter Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Stephen Curry tried to recruit Paul George to the Golden State Warriors.

George was open to playing for the Warriors.

However, Golden State didn’t offer Brandin Podziemski or Jonathan Kuminga to the Los Angeles Clippers for George.

After trade talks between the Warriors and Clippers broke down, George declined his 2024-25 player option with LAC and signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

“Curry was in on the recruitment of George,” Slater reported. “Mike Dunleavy keeps him in the loop on the options and ultimate personnel decisions. Curry hasn’t, team sources said, expressed any signs of panic or unrest. But there’s a choice of action or inaction in the coming months that’ll give a clearer hint about his long-term mindset.

“Curry is eligible for a one-year, $62.6 million extension to his contract, which has two seasons and $115.3 million left. He flew back from Paris a few days ago and plans to unplug from basketball-related business for a few weeks. So any contract conversation isn’t expected to take place in the near future, league sources said. It’ll be entirely on Curry’s preferred timeline. The deadline to extend is Oct. 21.”

The Warriors missed the playoffs last season.

Klay Thompson left for the Dallas Mavericks in free agency and Golden State didn’t acquire George or Lauri Markkanen despite trying to.

Curry, the best shooter in NBA history, signed a four-year, $215 million extension with the Warriors in August 2021. He’ll make $55.8 million next season and $59.6 million in 2025-26.

The Warriors can sign Curry to a one-year, $62.6 million extension this offseason.

Curry appeared in 74 games last season. He averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 45.0% from the field, 40.8% from beyond the arc and 92.3% from the free-throw line.

The Warriors drafted Curry with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Curry, who turns 37 next season, has career averages of 24.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists. He’s won four rings, two MVPs, one Finals MVP and two scoring titles.
