“Steph makes things, players, and games look outdated” – Colin Cowherd says Stephen Curry carried Team USA to 2024 Olympic gold

August 13, 2024

There were plenty of heroes in Team USA’s gold-medal run in the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics basketball tournament.

LeBron James was named the competition’s MVP after doing it all for the Americans. Kevin Durant also bucked a calf injury in training camp to return to the lineup and provide his usual scoring punch. And there’s unsung hero Devin Booker, who shunned his scoring mentality and did all the dirty work for the U.S., from playing stout defense to making plays for others.

However, according to Colin Cowherd, only one guy carried the U.S. to the podium – and it wasn’t any of those players mentioned above. In a recent segment on “The Herd,” Cowherd boldly declared that Stephen Curry was the sole reason for the USA’s success in securing their fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

Made legends look like mere mortals

Colin pointed out that while LeBron may have had an outstanding tournament and Durant showed immense grit and resilience, Curry’s performance in their last two games ultimately pushed Team USA over the finish line. Serbia looked poised to knock the Americans out of the tournament in the semifinals as they built a 17-point lead in the first half.

However, Curry’s 36-point flurry, highlighted by nine triples, averted disaster and set up the finals showdown against France. It was there where the “Chef” really cooked, draining eight treys, including four in the game’s final three minutes.

He capped off his memorable performance by making an improbable trey over two French defenders, which left many teammates and hoop legends like Dwyane Wade, Pau Gasol, Scottie Pippen, and Carmelo Anthony, who were watching from the sidelines alike, in sheer awe.

“When you’re truly an all-timer, you can make all-time greats feel less than or outdated,” Colin said.

In fact, on the play where Steph made his final triple—which commentators described as the “golden dagger”—two other equally legendary players were wide open and ready to take the shot had the ball swung to them: LeBron and KD. But the two-time NBA MVP was in such an incredible rhythm that he made a near-impossible shot look ordinary.

“Steph makes things, players, and games look outdated. There is only one guy and one reason Team USA won the gold, and it’s not LeBron—it’s Steph,” the longtime broadcaster asserted.

Best point guard ever

Steph’s breathtaking performance bolstered his case for being the best point guard to ever play the game. Despite his smaller stature, he has revolutionized the position with his out-of-this-world shooting and unparalleled playmaking skills, which often leave his friends and foes in utter disbelief.

“Take out Magic Johnson—he is by far and away the best point guard ever. Only Magic is close, and Magic couldn’t score like this. Magic elevated others and could play more positions, but he didn’t do this. When other players like LeBron James not only look at you but kind of look at you in awe because you can do things they can’t—that’s something,” Cowherd added.

With nearly 20 million watching the gold-medal game, Steph rose to the occasion and put on a show for the ages, solidifying his place as one of the greatest players to ever grace a basketball court.
