Spanish archaeologists have discovered a mummy in “very good” condition near the city of Luxor, southern Egypt. The information was announced by the Egyptian Ministry of Archeology on November 13.
The mummy found dates from 1075 to 664 BC, located west of the Nile River, 700km south of Cairo. When found, the mummy was covered in linen and lined with plaster.
The mummy is estimated to date back more than 1,000 years ago.
The mummy was kept in a wooden coffin with elaborate motifs and buried in a temple from the reign of King Thutmose III. The Ministry of Archeology believes that this mummy belongs to a prestigious person who served in the royal family. King Thutmose III is considered the greatest emperor of ancient Egypt, often honored as “Napoleon”.
Myriam Seco Alvarez, head of the archaeological team, said the mummy “is decorated with many elaborate motifs from ancient Egypt, with images of the goddesses Isis and Nephtys”. Ancient remains show that mummification in Egypt began more than 6,500 years ago.
