Where Did You Rank Tua?

Tony Nguyen | Miami Dolphins

Earlier this our very own Nick Sabatino wrote this post, where he focused on a story from Pro Football Focus where they ranked all NFL starting quarterbacks. I then followed it up with the following question-

Do you, as a Miami Dolphins fan, believe that there are thirteen quarterbacks in the NFL who are currently better than our starter, Tua Tagovailoa? If you think Tua was ranked too low or too high, where would you have ranked him versus the rest of the NFL’s staters?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

coluccim has Tua somewhere in the middle of the pack and hates the Dallas Cowboys!

Interesting exercise – this list is fluid. I have seen things I like about Richardson, Purdy and Goff, that may make me think they should be higher. And I have seen things I don’t like about Hurts and Lawrence to maybe move them down (and I hate all things Cowboys).

1 Mahommes – Kansas City Chiefs

2 Burrow – Cincinnati Bengals

3 Allen – Buffalo Bills

4 Rodgers – New York Jets

5 Jackson – Baltimore Ravens

6 Stafford – Los Angeles Rams

7 Stroud – Houston Texans

8 Love – Green Bay Packers

9 Goff – Detroit Lions

10 Purdy – San Francisco 49ers

11 Herbert – Los Angeles Chargers

12 Cousins* – Atlanta Falcons

13 Lawrence – Jacksonville Jaguars

14 Hurts – Philadelphia Eagles

15 Tua – Miami Dolphins

16 Richardson – Indianapolis Colts

17 Prescott – Dallas Cowboys

18 Mayfield – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

19 Watson – Cleveland Browns

20 Murray – Arizona Cardinals

21 Smith – Seattle Seahawks

22 Carr – New Orleans Saints

23 Levis – Tennessee Titans

24 Jones – New York Giants

25 Young – Carolina Panthers

Can’t Rank

26 Denver Broncos

27 Las Vegas Raiders

28 New England Patriots

29 Pittsburgh Steelers

30 Chicago Bears

31 Minnesota Vikings

32 Washington Commanders

Dolfan88 has a much shorter answer but sees Tagovailoa in the top ten.

Between 6 and 10, for now!

Luvs2drnk2.0 agrees with Bill and thinks that a win in the playoffs is all that stands between Tua and a top rating in the NFL.

Definitely top 5-10, success in the playoffs is the only thing holding him back from being top 5.

daytonadolfan says top five, and PFF can go someplace really sucky!

PFF is full of squid s#!t !! It’s the Dolphin dilemma; every sports writer in the country hates the Fins! Tua’ is top 5 if anything, that’s my story and i’m sticking to it!

Riccky says Tua is worth a second and third-day draft pick and no more! I take it that Riccky doesn’t rank him super high.

The real question is if you traded him right now, what’s his worth 2rd and a 4rd that’s it , now ask yourself is he worth 50 freaking million a year,I rest my case but those wr are worth every penny

phinsatx has Tua in the mix for the top ten!

I think he is probably ranked too low, but I also think it is tough because QBs are a moving target. They are not the same one year to the next and are rarely ranked solely based on last year’s performance. When you look at the stats they paint a weird picture. Tua is at the top at yards, although I don’t think anyone would argue that some of the star QBs had a rough year. TDs are a strange picture too, but Tua still ranks well. Overall, I’d say Tua is top 10 stats-wise two years in a row (despite serious injuries last year). So, I’d guess I’d say he is in the mix for top 10. There are still rookies and young player going off, old players coming back from injury and washed up prospects coming back. Honestly, the league is chaotic.

Grmtfinfan says it’s all a sham!

What a crock that list is….Herbert at 5??? Aaron Rodgeres at 8? Neither player played enough to be top ten. They lost me right there with any nonsence they could say. Herbert has done nothing. No way he is top 5!

ChumpPunk is another that thinks success in the postseason is the key to a higher ranking for Tua!

Until he plays better at the end of the season, especially the playoffs, I don’t rank him in the top 10. Maybe at 15th or 16th. He needs to improve his escape ability and running game. Just throwing quickly is too easy to stop. So, in the middle of the pack.

finfanfromsiam has him near the very top of the league.

Top 5-7 in the league.

holland182.0 has Tagovailoa ranked as a serviceable backup.

Somewhere between 43 and 45

EJPLAYA has him ascending as the season progresses.

I’m going about 7-8 right now and believe he’ll break top 5 by the end of this season.

PGPhinsFan ranks Tua top half but still in the middle of the pack…maybe…

I would probably put Tua somewhere between 11-14. He isn’t one of the big 3 Mahomes, Allen, or Burrow. 4-8 would probably be Stroud, Love, Jackson, and Rodgers. I like Lawrence, and Stafford better also. I would put Tua in there with Carr, Herbert, and Mayfield. Tua seems like a good guy off the field, but if he is going to succeed, he needs a lot of help on the o-line specifically. One of the reasons he folded at the end of the season. Once you hit Tua once he isn’t the same in the game. That is why he wrecks the bad teams, and struggles vs the good teams.

Trill Treezy, I take it is not a big fan, but Murray in front of him??? Okay…

I’d have put him a couple spots lower. I agree with everyone named above him but would have put a couple more ahead like Goff and Murray.

budglo says that there’s a bias against Tua.

I love it when the talking heads cherry pick stats to support their bias . I’m willing to give Tua a pass for playing under Flores for 2 years . What a crap system he had with zero support . Been to the playoffs 2 years in a row . Caught some bad breaks this year . I’ve seen enough so far to see that he will continue to develop and get better . Our OL and defense needs to continue to improve before we can challenge elite teams . Amazing talking heads give Mayfield a pass for his Cleveland years , but not Tua for his Flores years . If he hits a wall this year , maybe we’re concerned , but I expect him to improve . Doesn’t fit some ppls idea of an ideal QB? BFD.

Thomas23059 says Tua is near the very top and getting better!

Third.

Right now, I would have him behind Mahomes and Allen. He would probably be behind Burrow if Burrow had been healthy last year. I’d have him behind Lamar Jackson as well, except the Chiefs dared Jackson to beat them through the air and he couldn’t do it. Tua is the only active player who has led the NFL in both passer rating and passing yards. And he continues to get better.

herbert pollack says middle of the pack!

12-15

DolfaninME has Tagovailoa as better than 90% of the QBs in the NFL.

Too low. People are penalizing Tua for executing the plays that are called. Throwing the ball to open receivers. He is accurate and makes wicked fast decisions. That makes him better than 90% of quarterbacks in the league.

ramsestg says top 5 and pay him accordingly, never mind PFFs formula!

USMCFinzFreak is still waiting for Tua to show him!

Until he can win big games, he will always be a second-tier quarterback to me (and I have been a supporter of him, and still am).

Dolfanjoe says he’s better than average and besides, what else is out there?

Top 15 makes him better than average ! Could price himself out of a job here ! Playing for another team he may find it much harder to prove his value than with this stacked team. Truth is that he is better than the backups and looking at the market what else is out there ? Tanny ? Really do not see any improvement there . Rock and a hard place as they say. Tanny might be much better off taking a two year extension if he truly believes in himself . 75 Mill guaranteed and he is set for life, make that again as a backup for 7 years afterwards if things don’t pan out . Yea tough life………………….

phinette believes that some are seduced by the jersey on his back when handing out rankings!

Wow! Love is truly blind. I am a bit stunned by the top 5 rankings. Speaking as a long, long time Dolphins fan, I cannot put him in the top 10. His lack of arm strength, improvisational skills, and ability to read complex defensive schemes is an issue. He is a good QB but not elite. I put him somewhere between 13-15.

NCSurferMike has him top ten!

8th

SlayerNation1 expects things to keep getting better.

Ranked as QB1 of the Dolphins and likely #1 or 2 on the pay scale soon. Those rankings will not be subjective.

I get the low hanging fruit take: can’t beat good teams , no playoff wins yet. Those criticisms can be leveled on McD also and most want Him to stay around.

From a fan perspective, be happy Tua is eating up the lesser teams. That wasn’t a given in the span between Marino/Shula and Tua/McD. That is a positive.

We witnessed Mahomes evolve from a rookie to a Champ. We witnesses Lamar and Allen to evolve into better QBs.

Why should not Tua have space to keep evolving? He has been since 2020, positive. Same for McD.

I expect for Tua and McD to make inroads against better teams this year. The goal will always be get Home Field for a playoff run – like every team in every sport ever.

Crazygator has him top ten but says he doesn’t handle pressure well.

I think he is in the top 10, around 7 or 8. I also concur with previous posters that he can improve if the Dolphins fix the line to give him something akin to say that 1984-1986 that Dan got to start playing behind. It does make a difference. Mahomes has a very good line. The one year bith of his OT went out, the Bucs D crushed him. I think Tua has good vision, obviously very accurrate, throws the deep ball, and makes good decisions. His flaws, to me, are his size and that he doesn’t handle pressure well(again the Fins have a bad line, none of our guys except Jackson would be starters on other teams). BUT, I think the additions of OBJ and Junnu(he will be a decent contributor) and the RB from Tennessee are going to give Tua a plethora of weapons who will all have very good hands. I’m looking forward to an explosive year offensively.

Csonka has him in the top ten when a chance to be top five!

Top 10, with the potential to keep growing and maybe make top 5.

It’s all subjective though, what one person likes in a QB another doesn’t. I loved Dan the Man but if you liked mobile QBs then he wasn’t your man

I am surprised that so many had him ranked so high, but also surprised that some had him ranked so low. Thank you to each of you who took the time to answer our question of the day.
