Your Miami Dolphins All-Time Worst 5 Draft Picks

Two nights ago, I posted the answers to the five best draft picks of all time by our Miami Dolphins question. This evening’s post are the answers for the other side of that coin: the worst five draft picks of all time by our Miami Dolphins. The question that was answered was-

What is your top five list of the WORST draft picks of our Miami Dolphins all time?

Below are some of your answers and thoughts on the question of the day-

SlayerNation1 mentions an obscure pick from 1999. JJ was selected in the second round but still should have done better than to bomb out of the league after four seasons, as most second-rounders should be day-one starters.

JJ Johnson was their first pick in 1999. Apparently, his only qualification was the shared name with the HC at the time.

JKBMia mentions the number one overall pick of the 2008 draft. I would argue that Long was a very solid player until injuries derailed his career towards its end.

The Jake Long is also pretty terrible – given that they had needed a franchise QB for a decade at the time and they had the chance to pick Matt Ryan.

Outside of Orlando Pace, it’s hard to argue it’s ever been a good pick to take a Tackle #1

FinscallyIrresponsible mentions a guy who could have been so much more if he had stopped failing drug tests and focused on his play.

Dion Jordan is number 1. 3rd pick of the draft and Ireland traded up to get him. I called him a bust from day 1 but some fans thought he’d be “the next Jason Taylor”. LMAO

dedstrk316’s answer has a theme, and he still may not be over a couple of players who did not work out.

1. Dion Jordan

2. Iggy

3. Jordan

4. Iggy

5. (tie) Jordan/Iggy

Call_for_the_Priest’77 is still thinking about the two picks that the team was unable to make…

I think one could add (if they haven’t already done so) a dishonorable mention for owner Mr. Ross for wasting our 2023 first-round pick (and a third this year!) as punishment for trying to steal away Brady and Sean Payton from their contractual obligations elsewhere.

On the flip side, eons earlier, founding team owner Joe Robbie knew how to forfeit a first-round draft pick when he questionably ‘hired away’ Don Shula from his Baltimore Colts HC contractual obligations in 1970 (credit to posting author “Dolfriend” for bringing this up a few days ago).

henryp has a list of sadness…so much damn sadness…

1. John Avery – we traded out of getting Randy Moss and ended up with this guy.

2. Dion Jordan – more suspensions than sacks

3. Charles Harris – half a sack more than Dion Jordan

4. Eric Kumerow – Chris Spielman was right there for the taking.

5. Sammie Smith – oooof

DolphinFan85’s list is fair, but I doubt the team had any idea that Hill would be unable to avoid one injury after another.

Yatil Green, Randal Hill, John Avery, John Bosa, Sammy Smith

jkcoolr brought up the hiring of a hall-of-fame coach to be the team’s Executive VP Of Football Operations. Also, RIP Pat White!

Im my opinion… the worse draft decision we ever made was hiring Bill Parcells . Mr “if you want me to cook, I need to buy the groceries” and he immediately threw that credo out the window and fired coaches because they couldn’t reinstate the wishbone, triple option with Patsy White.

PA phinphan says this list is in no order nor has any rhyme or reason.

In no particular order, Dion Jordan, John Beck, Noah Igbinoghene, Charles Harris, and John Bosa

unclejohnny has some of the usual suspects.

Did everybody forget Eric Kumerow? Next to Dion Jordan biggest bust ever

#1 Dion Jordan

#2 Eric Kumerow

#3 Iggy (poster child for current rebuild failure)

#4 Charles Harris

#5 Sammie Smith

finfanfromsiam added Martin. I am surprised that he didn’t make nearly every list.

5) John Bosa

4. Ferrel Edmunds

3. Pat White(he dead)

2. Jon(baby) Martin

1. Dion Jordan

coluccim brings another solid list and a personal heartbreak.

I’ll start with:

Jonathan Martin

Noah Igbinoghene

Charles Harris

Dallas Thomas (I know he was a 3rd rounder, but I don’t think anyone ever upset me more)

Deion Jordan

Kalen Ballage – honorable mention

SuperG! has suffered with a lot of us over the last 2 plus decades.

1. Dion Jordan

2. Johnathan Martin

3. Pat White

4. Yatil Green

5. John Avery

daytonadolfan wasn’t happy with his family either!

1. Pat White 2. Sammie Smith 3. Ted Ginn jr. (and his family) 4.Yatil Green 5. John Bosa ! Just to name a few !

Thomas23059 wants to know why there are so many to choose from. I suspect that if there were not we would not have sucked so much for so long.

Why are there so many to choose from?

Here are a few dishonorable mentions:

Eric Kumerow and John Bosa – This is from when I first started to follow the draft, so they get special awards for being bad picks for me

Sammie Smith – I only put one back on the list, and someone else deserved it more, but he is close

Randall Hill and Yatil Green – Why, oh why, could they not get a decent recevier for Marino in the 90s (all apologies to McDuffie and Gadsden, those guys were great)

Noah Igbinoghene – the only reason I didn’t put him the the top 5 was that he was the 3rd pick in the 1st round for Miami

5 – John Avery – This was supposed to be our feature back?

4 – Jamar Fletcher – The next six picks included Reggie Wayne and Drew Brees

3 – Charles Harris – I don’t think I need to explain this one

2 – Dion Jordan – Or this one, only why he is number 2

1 – Andrew Greene and Billy Milner – I give these two a special combo spot as the worst top of draft ever. The Dolphins desperately wanted to replicate the success of the Webb/Simms draft, instead we got these guys. Miami’s line has been terrible ever since.

There were many solid lists and even some players that I had forgotten about. Trauma makes you forget a lot! Thank you again to everyone who answered the question of the day and entered the conversation. I will return tomorrow evening with another question of the day post.
