Your Surprise 2024 Miami Dolphins Cut(s)

Last week, I pointed out that AZ Sports had this article in which they picked a “surprise” cut for each of the NFL’s 32 teams during their 2024 training camp. The article had our Miami Dolphins surprise cut as Jeff Wilson. I pointed out that many fans and media types see Wilson as a possible odd man out this year, making him anything but a surprise if he is cut. I then asked the following question-

Given that Jeff Wilson’s being cut from the roster will not be a surprise if it happens, what veteran do you see possibly being cut in/at the end of training camp that would surprise other fans or the media?

Below are some of your answers and thoughts on the question of the day-

JKBMia has a list of possible surprises, including a duo of DBs.

I guess Poyer or Needham from a “surprise” standpoint?

I wouldn’t imagine either get cut – but those 2 would surprise me the most.

Ahmed/Cracraft/JWJ/Riley and to some extent Berrios & Smythe would all make sense and wouldn’t really be a surprise, just more a result of the numbers game that is the NFL.

Saw Eich’s name a few times – can’t imagine that one, so I guess he would qualify as a surprise cut candidate too but I don’t see any chance of that.

daytonadolfan has the surprise cuts as one or both backup QBs. Perhaps Joe is considering coming out of retirement to play backup QB for his Dolphins!?!

Evening, going with White and or Skyler….maybe not so surprising, but that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

SuperG! really wants a new punter but sees Ahmed as a possible surprise.

Is it possible to cut the punter please???

Well, if I’m not allowed to choose JWJ then I’m going to choose Ahmed who will be less of a surprise cut.

krammm says that Berrios and Cracraft might be on their way out.

I don’t think veterans Berrios and Cracraft have done anything special enough to beat out rookies Wright and Washington. Especially if the rookies are punt and KO returners.

The problem with rookie RB’s is that they don’t pick up the blitz like a veteran but they say Wright might be the best on the team at this already. That hurts Wilsons chances.

SlayerNation1 can’t figure out how Ahmed is still around.

Ahmed… which is already a surprise that he is still around to be cut… seems uncuttable for some reason

Thomas23059 thinks the surprise might be Smythe.

The problem with surprise cuts is that there probably won’t be any to people that follow the team. Wilson is a perfect example.

Anyway, here is mine. I don’t want to see him go, but I would not be surprised if Durham Smythe doesn’t make the roster. He has been a good player for Miami, but they have improved the TE grroup enough for him to be on the bubble. Surprise 1A, because I really don’t think it will happen, but it could. It would have to be a trade for cap implications, but Aaron Brewer. IF Miami somehow brings back Connor Williams, I think Brewer is gone, They won’t keep two high priced centers.

Yarganaught thinks it might be our fullback who is the shocker.

Ingold… What does he really do anyways? But seriously, I’ve read that Wright is pretty good at pass protection too.

MIAMI235 thinks the surprise will be from the group of wide receivers.

Depending on how many WRs are on the active roster, there is a big chance that someone is going to get cut, that the fan base individually, will find surprising regardless.

Maybe ending up on practice squad.

Call_for_the_Priest’77 says it could be Poyer.

My choice for surprise cut would be Jordan Poyer. We all are hoping that he still has enough game to make a difference for us though I think he may need to prove that somewhat in preseason. At 33, his game has definitely regressed somewhat. His dead cap is only $1M and his cap savings is just a few grand below that so there is no financial obstacle there. There are also several candidates that could oust him including Maye and Needham. Draftee Patrick McMorris might have something to say as well, particularly if Poyer really shows he’s on the decline.

I’m making it sound as if Poyer shouldn’t last the day in Miami but obviously we are hoping for some good intangibles out of Poyer like experience and mentoring for the younger guys, to go along with what he has left in the tank. I think it would take a combination of unexpected rise from one of the other guys and a greater decline than expected from Poyer to see him cut. Improbable but possible.

finfanfromsiam thinks that it might be the receiver who has had a hard time getting on the field.

Easy E…….?

tpl sees the surprise cut as Eichenberg but also says Berrios and Cracraft are gonners.

Berrios and Cracraft are both gone. They were on the team last year and Miami still had 3rd WR problems. Malik Washington has experience as a kick returner. But my surprise cut will be Eichenberg.

Dolfriend believes that with the addition of two DEs via the draft Chubb could be the odd man out.

Weird to say but…Chubb. Injury settlementReasons:1. The 3rd most expensive player on the team $15.8M. Only Tua and Tyreek have a higher cap hit.2. Might not fully recover from the injury.3. Chop and Mo – $3.5M combined

probably not going to happen because of the dead money but…

sdphinsfan is another who sees Poyer as a possible surprise.

Although unlikely, I’m going with Poyer. Inexpensive vet on a one year deal so we aren’t losing much cost wise. For this to happen, Needham or somebody else, is really going to have to shine.

Dolfanjoe says Jeff Wilson and Ahmed are gone, with the surprise possibly being Berrios.

Jeff Wilson and Ahmed are both gone ! But the bigger surprise could be Berrios. Wanting to keep youth on the roster, but will be a hard decision . Berrios is not great, but he is a solid player who catches the ball goes forward and does not fumble ! This camp will be about beating out another player to be able to make it on the 53. Practice squad will be our lifeline throughout the long season !

Spok507 says Berrios may not be needed anymore.

I would be surprised if they cut Berrios. With the addition of the Washingtons and OBJ, Berrios and Cracraft both seem like they’re superfluous to the WR room. The Fins have a lot of options to be the kick returner and now that the rules have been changed, it will be more advantageous to have a speedster doing the job. So I’m not sure Berrios is actually needed anymore.

FinscallyIrresponsible says it will be a WR or RB.

Phins have 16 mil in cap space so any cuts won’t have to do with cap savings. It will come down to performance in camp and preseason. RB and WR rooms are crowded. It will be one of them.

If fan opinions had any sway over who gets cut in this camp, I would be nervous if my last name were Berrios, Cracraft, or Ahmed. Thank you again to everyone who answered our question of the day and participated in the nightly discussion. We will return tomorrow evening with another question of the day post.
