Your Take On The Miami Dolphins Current Backup QB Situation

Watch Hard Knocks: In Season with the Miami Dolphins, Season 1 | Prime Video

Our Miami Dolphins wrapped up their preseason schedule this past Friday evening with a loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team then returned to Miami, where the front office wasted no time working through the roster by cutting a few players by the end of the weekend, including backup quarterback Mike White. As we all know, White has now signed a deal to be a Buffalo Bills practice squad member since leaving South Florida. The cutting of White left the Dolphins with only two quarterbacks on the roster, starter Tua Tagovailoa and backup Skylar Thompson.

NOTESince writing this post, the news that the Dolphins have signed a quarterback to the practice squad has been reported. Tim Boyle, a former NY Jets quarterback, was added. Boyle has not had a perfect time of it when he has played in actual NFL games. Let’s pray we don’t get to the point where he’s someone we must rely on in any game this season.

After the cut of Mike White, I asked the following question:

Are you comfortable with the Dolphins going forward with only two quarterbacks on the roster, or do you want/need to see them add another quarterback to the roster or the practice squad before their week one game? If you wish they had a third QB, aka second backup, do you find it realistic to bring someone in at this point and get them up to speed on a somewhat complicated offensive scheme in time to even make a difference?

Below are some of your answers and thoughts on the question of the day-

TheRoo1 believes that the team will add a third QB to the roster. I suspect that is true, but that the third signal caller will be added to the practice squad.

It was just 2 seasons that our Rookie third string QB started a pivotal game for us. No way they go without a third now.

Dolfanjoe agrees with me, with the only question left to be answered is who and from where.

Of course we will have a QB on the practice squad ! Where we are going to poach one from is the question mark. Another question is will it be a vet or a rookie ? A vet may come here feeling he can compete with Tylar for the backup job. But i like the idea of finding a promising rookie. Hope we find the right one going forward. Drafting a QB next year will be in our best interest !

Miami7, in response to Dolfanjoe, agrees and also does not agree.

While I agree – I also don’t.

From the standpoint of look at our picks THIS year….

Wright/Kamara/McMorris and the ‘2’ Washington’s. EACH of these guy’s has a legit shot at contributing ‘THIS’ year, whereas most years—-and probly including this one—-ya look at 4th/5th/6th+ Rd. picks as needle-in-a-haystack prayers to be a part of the team. Most certainly, any QB taken in those later Rds. is generally considered an even bigger longshot than the types we drafted this year. We really shoulda taken a flyer on Fields….but JMO, we’d be better served attaining a vet that can run a dumbed down version of the ‘O’, lean on the run game and just not make (rookie) stupid decisions….for a few games. If Tua goes down long term it’s no different here than in KC/Cincy/Baltimore/Buffalo, etc. – we’re DONE FOR! JMO

21Dave wants some better depth along the lines. That’s fair; now, can we somehow get through to Grier?

We need to Purdge some vet OL and DL men first and foremost. They just need to mentor and fill in voids while taking 15-20 snaps a game in relief times and not a severe downgrade from our less-than-stellar starters. I am not down as hard on Skylar as some. We know we can win with him, and let him get more reps with the 1s he will probably be quicker with the reads. Not saying he is great, either. Sit these boys in the film room and walk-throughs for the next few days and let them do a lot of rehabbing. We have a tough start, and we need them to be ready to go!! Phins Up!!

tpl says it WILL happen, so you had better be prepared.

Miami certainly needs to sign a QB to the practice squad. Tua is going to get injured at some point this season and Miami will need a 3rd string QB.

phinette is not sold on Thompson as the guy to run this thing if Tua is out.

Given that over half of the NFL teams had to use their backups at some point last season, it would be wise for us to have someone at QB 2 who can run the offense. I’m not sure Skyler is the guy but it looks as though we’re running with him. I would not sign White to the practice squad. Time to move on. We should be monitoring very closely the roster cutdowns of the other teams. Maybe we can pick up someone. I do think it was a mistake to enter the offseason satisfied with our backup situation, but alas, here we are. Phins up!

Thomas23059 wants a third guy.

They have a special game day roster spot that can only be used by a third QB. It would be foolish to not have someone for that spot. At this point, Mike White is still the best guy for the spot, but that may change as other teams release QBs.

EJPLAYA believes in Thompson!

The Buffalo playoff game showed me Skylar could produce when it mattered. Let’s roll with who we have and try and pick up a developmental talent to put on the practice squad.

Luvs2drnk2.0, in response to EJPLAYA, is not so sure.

I’m not sure why people keep pointing to the Buffalo game as a reason to keep Skylar. In that game he completed less than 50% of his passes and threw 2 INTs to one TD. He was given the ball THREE TIMES in the 2nd qtr on the Buffalo side of the field and only managed 14 points. The Bills literally handed us the game with 4 Allen TOs. Even a slightly better QB wins us that game. With that being said, I think he’s fine being the backup this year. I fully expect them to take a QB in the draft next year (3rd-5th round), and move on from Skylar.

finfanfromsiam had a prediction that didn’t age as well as he has.

Dont celebrate too soon….my guess is MFW will go to the PS as no one will pick his sorry ass up!

Alpha6 wants the team to consult with him more often.

I feel just the two QBs will do. However, the team never does what I feel. So, I’m thinking that eventually there will be a Turd Ferguson.

daytonadolfan wants what I suspect will happen.

I wouldn’t mind them sticking a 3rd QB to the practice squad, there should be a few available after Tuesday!

It seems like the majority is fine with Skylar Thompson as the second man up, but I would like to see another arm added to the practice squad. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read our posts and share their thoughts every evening.
